Police have confirmed that veteran Hollywood actor Gene Hackman was found deceased at his Santa Fe residence.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home. He did not disclose the cause of death but stated that foul play is not suspected. Additionally, their dog was discovered deceased alongside them. Investigations are ongoing to determine further details.

Mendoza also did not comment on when the couple might have died when he was asked by reporters.

Mendoza declined to specify when the couple may have died when questioned by reporters. In a statement, he said, “All I can say is that we’re conducting a preliminary death investigation and awaiting approval for a search warrant.”

Hackman, a Hollywood legend, is best remembered for his iconic roles as Lex Luthor in Superman, Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven, and Jimmy Doyle in The French Connection.\

Known for his privacy, Hackman announced his retirement from acting in 2004. Following this, he left Los Angeles and relocated to New Mexico.

At the time, Hackman told the press, “I haven’t held a press conference to announce retirement, but yes, I’m not going to act any longer. I really don’t want to do it any longer.”

With over 100 acting roles, Hackman concluded his career, though rumors suggested his retirement was due to stress.

He and Betsy Arakawa began dating in the mid-1980s and married in 1991. However, Hackman clarified that he did not leave his first wife, Faye Maltese, for Betsy. Despite his Hollywood success, he valued privacy and a quieter life away from the entertainment industry.

He stated, “I did not leave my wife for a younger woman. We simply drifted apart and lost sight of each other. In this industry, marriage requires tremendous effort and love.”
